The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. It is a large, tidal body of water where freshwater from inland rivers mixes with the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean. The Susquehanna, Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James Rivers are the five largest rivers in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. There are also more than 100,000 streams, creeks, and rivers that thread through the watershed. Every day, these rivers and tributaries send about 51 billion gallons of freshwater into the Chesapeake Bay. Clean-up efforts that stabilize and restore rivers and streams are essential to protect the diverse population of animals that live in these habitats.
