Diamondback terrapins are the only brackish water turtle species in the United States. They rely on shoreline habitats for nesting, foraging and development of their hatchlings. Diamondbacks face numerous threats; habitat loss due to land development and mortality from crabbing gear, both commercial and recreational, are major contributor to the reduction in Diamondback populations. Luckily, many jurisdictions in the Chesapeake Bay are working to conserve their natural habitats and require installation of by-catch reduction devices on crab pots to reduce this threat.
