Sumatra Mutu Batak comes from the growing region of Lintong in Northern Sumatra, an island that is politically and geographically part of Indonesia. It is produced in Lintongnihuta on the southern shores of Lake Toba. Lake Toba defines the landscape of the area. At over 1,145sq km, and up to a depth of 450 meters in places, Lake Toba is actually more like an ocean. It is the world’s largest crater lake as well as being the largest lake in Southeast Asia and one of the deepest in the world. It was formed due to a massive super-volcanic eruption. This eruption was the largest-known explosive eruption that the earth had experienced in the past 25 million years. The collapse that occurred after the eruption resulted in the formation of the huge caldera that Lake Toba presently occupies. A resurgent dome led to the formation of an island at the heart of the lake.
Lintong coffees are farmed by the Batak peoples that are the indigenous tribe that works the coffee in this area. It is wet hulled, completely sun-dried and triple-picked resulting in the heavy body that is characteristic of the region. It is also noted as having a great acidity for Sumatra.
We sourced this coffee through Hacienda La Minita. They own and manage two farms in Costa Rica, operate two mills in Costa Rica and one mill in Colombia. In addition to the farms and mills that are owned and operated by Hacienda La Minita, they also work with many partners at origin to source coffee offerings from around the world. For their sourcing, they purchase as directly as possible, at the nearest point to the producer. This helps to eliminate unnecessary costs and provides the majority of money to the ones most responsible for actual production of the coffees. They give preference to producers and producer groups who exhibit commitments to local social issues, including worker health and safety, environmental stewardship, dedication to quality, and concern for the health and sustainability of future crops and yields.
